Republican politicians, for the most part, have little desire to do anything about this. But much of the problem is Section 230 which provides a legal shield for most of the sludge on the internet under the banner of free speech . There has to be a very clear, specific threat online for it to be actionable. Bullying teens to the point of suicide, revenge porn, etc, is in effect, legal, for the same reason. You cannot sue the internet platform that enabled it, they are exempt under 230. That much of the militia organizing is hidden in places like Discord or Telegram, makes it harder for the FBI to know what they're planning.

RE: the "Lone wolf" issue, I read somewhere that a group (maybe Proud Boys, I don't recall) has cleverly become de-centralized specifically to protect themselves against RICO charges.
